Free STL Viewer
Use this free STL viewer to open ASCII or binary files, inspect wireframe, rotate and zoom. Your model stays on your device.

ASCII or binary STL · maximum 25 MB · up to 400,000 triangles
Your model stays on your device. No account needed. How to use the STL viewer
- Open one file. Drop a local .stl file or choose it from your device. Both ASCII and binary encodings are supported, up to 25 MB and 400,000 triangles.
- Inspect all sides. Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, or use the zoom buttons. Focus the preview and use arrow keys to rotate with a keyboard.
- Compare solid and wireframe. Toggle Wireframe to see triangle edges. Return to solid shading to judge the silhouette; Reset view restores the camera.
A quick inspection before editing or slicing
This STL viewer helps answer a practical question: did the intended geometry survive export? Look for a missing base, a detached handle, an unexpected extra object or a visibly coarse curve before returning to the source application.
The STL viewer fits each model to the screen. A miniature and a full-size object can look equally large, so use the numeric bounds rather than the grid as a physical ruler.
Need a target scale or dimension report? Open the size checker →Read the geometry, not just the silhouette
A useful STL viewer session starts with the underside, then moves around recesses and narrow connections. For a downloaded figurine, inspect the feet and base. For a housing, look inside the opening and around screw bosses. These are visual checks, not automated defect detection.
In the STL viewer, wireframe exposes the triangles that approximate a curved surface. Large facets along a rim may explain an angular silhouette. A dense wireframe does not prove better geometry: repeated or intersecting surfaces can still be present.
The shaded preview displays both sides of triangles. An open sheet may therefore remain visible from either direction. Do not interpret a convincing shaded view as proof of a closed solid or correctly oriented normals.
Try the supplied box before opening your own file
Choose Try a sample model in the STL viewer. Our original box contains 12 triangles and coordinate extents of 20 × 30 × 40. With millimeters selected and scale at 100%, those are the dimensions shown. Each rectangular face is represented by two triangles.
Rotate the box, switch wireframe on and reset the camera. The STL viewer should retain the same X, Y and Z values throughout: moving the camera does not rotate the stored geometry. This exercise checks basic parsing, display and bounds; it is not a printer calibration test.
You can also download the reference STL and read its CC0 provenance notes. For a less rectangular outline, our Blender SVG extrusion exercise supplies a separate house-shaped reference mesh.
When the file will not open
| What you see | Likely next check |
|---|---|
| File rejected | Confirm a complete ASCII or binary STL. Renaming an OBJ file does not convert its contents. |
| Size or triangle limit | Export only the intended object or simplify a copy. A smaller file may still exceed the triangle limit. |
| Dimensions appear, preview does not | Check WebGL availability. Geometry parsing and graphics rendering are separate operations. |
| Object disappeared after navigation | Use Reset view before assuming geometry is missing. The camera may have moved away. |
If the sample opens but your model fails, the STL viewer has established a useful distinction: investigate that file’s export, size and triangle count. If neither renders, investigate the browser’s graphics support first. Save the exact error message instead of repeatedly uploading a different extension.
Questions about files, privacy and printing
Does this STL viewer upload or retain my model?
No model upload is required. The STL viewer reads selected files in browser memory; Clear model releases the tool’s references. Ordinary website requests still reach the host, and the browser controls memory cleanup. See the privacy policy for the distinction.
Can the STL viewer show color, textures, OBJ or GLB?
This STL viewer displays STL geometry with a neutral material. It does not interpret texture packages or support OBJ and GLB uploads. Use the file-format guide to choose a delivery format when color, materials or animation must survive.
Can I repair a mesh or export an edited file?
No. The STL viewer changes the view, not the model. Use a mesh editor such as Blender for geometry edits. Percentage scaling here changes the displayed measurements only; it does not create a resized STL.
Does a successful STL viewer preview mean the model is printable?
No. This STL viewer does not test watertightness, wall thickness, self-intersections or strength. Follow the print-preparation checklist, then inspect layers in a slicer configured for your printer and material.
Does it work on a phone?
The STL viewer runs in a browser with WebGL. The file picker and zoom buttons provide a route without desktop drag-and-drop. Available memory and graphics support vary by device; a small sample working does not guarantee that every large file will render smoothly.
